James "Jim" Richard Swanson

James Richard Swanson, 74, passed away peacefully on September 9th, 2023. Jim was born in Oskaloosa, attended Cornell University before moving to Des Moines. Jim met Sandy Sullivan playing competitive bridge and married in 1984 and not only got Sandy he had an instant family with 3 strong willed, opinionated adult stepdaughters. Jim worked for the State of Iowa for over 30 plus years. Once retired, Jim and Sandy loved to travel, play bridge and watch lots of sports together. Jim enjoyed lunches with his good friend, Bob Carber. Wednesday was their day, he loved grilled cheese and extra crispy French fries. Plus FREE PIE. Jim was one of the best duplicate bridge players in Iowa. He rarely made a mistake in the play of hand. His demeanor at the table was beyond reproach. He loved the Chicago Cubs and took great delight when they beat the St. Louis Cardinals. He was an Iowa Hawkeye fan and attended many football and basketball games with Bob. A large passion for Jim and Sandy was their love of Golden Retrievers. Over the years they supported and fostered Goldens through Iowa Golden Retriever Rescue. Fortunate to have them in their lives were Lucky, Belle, Gunner and Bailey. Jim loved to walk the dogs daily, meeting many neighbors who loved to greet the dogs and see them both. They lived in Patricia Park together for 35 years before moving to a nice townhome in Urbandale. Missing their puppy pets, they ended up rescuing an older kitty, Willow. Jim and Sandy also love and support all their grand puppies and grand kitties over the years. He will be missed by all and especially his dry sense of humor. Jim was proceeded in death by his Parents, Ray and Jean Swanson of Oskaloosa. Jim is survived by his wife, Sandra of Urbandale, Daughters Cindy Sullivan, Grimes, Stacy Sullivan, Urbandale and Stephanie Sullivan, Beaverdale. Jim has 3 siblings, Christina Randell of Cedar Rapids, John Swanson of Chariton and Jennifer Swanson of Oskaloosa. Nieces and nephews, Anne, Charlie, Amanda, James, Jessica and Mary. Jim was not a man of much attention, so his wishes were to have no services at this time. Memorial contributions can be made to his wife, Sandra Swanson at 4719 84th st. Urbandale, Ia. 50322.
