George William Meyer

George William Meyer passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 2, 2026 at Cedar Ridge Village in West Des Moines. George was born March 31, 1932 in Cantril, IA. As a boy, George enjoyed spending summers at his grandfather’s farm in Bentonsport, IA, doing chores, feeding the animals and riding horses on the property. In high school he was active in football, wrestling and theater. He attended Boy’s State in the summer of 1949 and graduated from Algona High School in 1950. George attended Valparaiso University where he met his future bride, Joyce McPherson. They were active in the Greek community where George was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity and was involved in Homecoming planning his junior and senior years. He graduated with a degree in business in 1954. George and Joyce were active in Alumni activities at Valpo and enjoyed reunions there for more than 50 years. George and Joyce married on November 21, 1954. Following their wedding, George enlisted in the Army. He was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. and Ft. Hood, TX. After the service, George started a banking career with a job in Ft. Wayne, IN. He served in a variety of management roles for over four decades for banks in Indiana, Iowa and Arizona before retiring in Fountain Hills, Arizona in the late 1980’s. He received a Graduate Degree in Banking from the University of Wisconsin. George and Joyce were active in the many churches of which they were members. He was instrumental in establishing the Concordia Educational Foundation in Ft. Wayne, IN. George was a loyal and active Kiwanis Club member during his professional career. He enjoyed golf, woodworking, gardening, his life in AZ and watching football, basketball and golf on TV. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Harold and Louida Meyer, brother Doug, wife Joyce and grandson, Nathan. He is survived by a son, Dan (Sharon) Meyer and daughter, Anne (Doug) Cameron, sister-in- law Carol McPherson, granddaughter, Maggie (Jake) Boesen, great granddaughters, Isla and Hallie Boesen and several nieces and nephews. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Cedar Ridge Village in West Des Moines and Hospice of the Midwest for their exceptional care in his final days. A private Graveside service is scheduled for Tuesday, August 11 at 10:30AM at East Lawn Memorial Gardens, Algona, IA.
