Betty Lou Leonard

Betty Lou Leonard, 79, passed away on June 25th, 2024 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. She was born March 9th, 1945, daughter of Bernard and Catherine (Kenoyer) Coon. For Betty, family was everything. She and Marlin were married in December of 1981. This is also when they started welcoming their gaggle of grandchildren. She was able to share her love of music and games with all of her grandchildren, including always seeming to win Cards Against Humanity. Any trip in the car would turn into karaoke. Betty would tell you that her favorite job was being an Iowa Highway Patrol dispatcher, and she loved being able to help DMACC students as a Financial Aid Advisor prior to retirement. After retirement, there were always game shows on the tv, random dance parties and baking lessons in the kitchen. Wherever Betty was seemed to find itself full of laughter, which would turn from giggles to cackles with a good joke. When Betty wasn’t watching Hallmark movies, or old detective shows, she would do her best to find anything with Sam Elliott or Mark Harmon in it. Betty is survived by daughters Denise (Duane) Preston, Andrea (Jim) Carr and Erika (John) Myrick, sister Dorothy Webb and brother LeRoy Coon. Betty is also survived by nine loving grandchildren; Joshua (Kaylla) White, Brenna (Callum) Tomlin, Joseph (Catie) Carr, Megan Preston, Shelby (Dyllon) Patterson, Dakota (Amber) Myrick, Amie (Jake) Stoughton, Sara Preston and Kaleb Preston, and her sixteen great grandchildren; Evelyn and Clara White, Piper and Meyer Tomlin, Natalie, Anna and Jameson Carr, Leah Cozad, Emma, Chloe, Calvin and Noah Patterson, Liam, Jaxon and Wyatt Myrick and Kinsley Stoughton. Betty will now be joining again with her parents Bernard and Catherine, husband Marlin and daughter Michele (Shelli) as well as brothers Ray, Jack and Jerry. Services will be at Radiant Church (1300 Metro E Dr. #106, Pleasant Hill, IA 50327) at 2:30pm on Sunday, June 30th, 2024. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Iowa Food Bank in honor of Betty and the passion she and Shelli shared for the organization. In memory of Betty, remember to always roll down your windows and sing your heart out.
